Get them out NOW!

Sorry RSPCA, you’re covered in effluent just like the Paxton’s.

I tried for a week to get you to act and get help for these dogs and this is what you told me.

Hello Debra, From the information you provided I am unaware of any violations against POCTAA. This would be best referred to DPI and with the local council for any CoP issues.

Hello Debra, Are you referring to the email you sent through yesterday or is this a different property?

Hello Debra, In relation to this information I have had inspectors attend on a number of occasions, as well council rangers have also attended. There have been no offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act that have been identified. There may be issues with the code of practice but these remain the realm of local government…

So my team was forced once again to risk their lives, enter the property undercover, witness the horror that these dogs were forced to endure, gather the evidence and go to the media. Something we wouldn’t have to do if you, the RSPCA would just do your job and be there “for all creatures great and small”. We don’t get paid for doing your job either.

And only then after all the public outrage did you think, shit we better do something!

RSPCA Swoops on Puppy Farm as public outrage builds

And then we watched as you went into damage control

RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil said when it comes to dog breeding, puppy farms were at the absolute bottom of the barrel.

“Most Australians would be appalled if they knew where many puppies actually came from,” Ms Neil said.

And then Premier John Brumby joined in demanding the puppy farm be shut down.

Premier joins fight to shut down puppy farm.

Victorian RSPCA president Maria Mercurio yesterday revealed she had personally called Moorabool Shire to see how her organization could assist in shutting down the farm.

“I got off the teleconference an hour ago. My opening line was how can we assist to close down this puppy farm? It is our common objective,” Ms Mercurio said.

“They made it clear to me that it was their intention and I was pleased to hear that resolve.”

Why RSPCA why ? Why didn’t you act immediately? Why do you have to wait for media attention BEFORE you will help animals and PREVENT cruelty. Your inspectors have been turning their backs on the Paxton’s dogs for EIGHT YEARS.

For 18 years a dedicated team of activists has been forced to enter properties undercover and collect evidence of shocking cruelty that is occurring on hundreds of puppy farm’s in this country. They are accused of “acting illegally”, being “terrorists”. We have our homes raided in the middle of the night, computers and equipment confiscated, sick traumatized animals ripped from us and returned to their abusers. We have infiltrators determined to bring us down, but NEVER succeed. I am honored and proud to work with such a brave group of people, who never ever give up, who protect and look after each other, who are prepared to risk everything in order to bring this hidden industry into public view. We will continue to do so.

If we are trespassing, so were the soldiers who broke down the gates of Hitlers death camps. If we are thieves so were the members of the underground railroad who freed the slaves of the South. If we are vandals so were those who destroyed for ever the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Author Unknown

UPDATE: 29/3/10

Members of our team and local residents have witnessed Les Paxton at the Adamo puppy farm (more on this soon) almost daily for the last few weeks.

On the 25/3/10 Les Paxton was witnessed arriving at Adamo’s puppy farm where they both were observed loading “dead animals” into a large pit at the back of the property.

At 1.15 AM on the morning of 26/3/10 we witnessed a male light a huge roaring fire in this pit to burn the dead animals bodies.

Thank God for ALV! Keep up the great work. Most people can see right through the RSPCA - they have a history of riding on the coattails of others hard work. They are the most useless animal organization in Australia.

  2. 2 Liz

You and the rest of the team at ALV are awesome!

Those at the top of the RSPCA heirarchy should feel so ashamed- they don’t seem to care about animals. So what do they care about? Their salaries perhaps? Despicable!

  3. 3 Dee

Well done guys, what you have to go through simply to get help for animals, disgusting
Infiltrators!-go infiltrate the RSPCA and leave these people alone.
RSPCA- you all need to resign
    Premier-investigate the RSPCA!

  4. 4 Melissa Birch

    Good job ALV!
poor dogs when will it all end for the thousands of dogs on puppy farms
NEVER BUY FROM PET SHOPS OR OVER THE INTERNET
    ADOPT DONT SHOP!

  5. 5 Narelle Shallcross

A job well done, such a pity it has to come to this when you would think the RSPCA would ultimately do the job that it is supposed to do. Everyone at ALV are fantastic, but why should they have to do this? How many other puppy mills are there in Australia? probably 1,000’s!

puppy farming is barbaric and the rspca should get them all shut down.

from what i have seen though, the rspca only does things in the glare of publicity with tv cameras…..this is totally unacceptable and the rspca should be put into the glare of publicity showing exactly how they do run………this would not do them any good, but there would be public outcry

  7. 7 Jane

This is such a good and appropriate post Deb. The RSPCA is as culpable as the perpetrators themselves for ignoring the terrible suffering of so many animals. An inquiry should be launched by an external organisation; in the meantime Hugh Wirth and Greg Boland should stand down from their positions for failing in their duty to care for Victorian animals.

I can only pray that these Paxton dogs make it through until the VCAT hearing on Monday and that someone has the ‘guts’ to act and get them out and hand them over to private rescue for the care and attention these dogs desperately need and deserve after a life of sheer cruelty and neglect.

I weep for those who have already died in the most horrific circumstances at the Paxtons and at puppy farms throught Australia, including Rutland Manor, KKK and ACA/Baskia Park; all just the tip of a huge icebreg.

It must end, and the public need to scream from the rooftops and the media must continue to publicise as the Geelong Advertiser have been prepared to do. The public are fully entitled to know, and fully entitled to ask why and how.

For all the other shires who have buried and covered up and procrastinated and continue with their paper shuffling, take note - the public of Victoria will not tolerate the factory farming of our companion animals, and there is a ground swell. For the puppy farmers - your days of profiting out of these animals are numbered. Find a new occupation.

The VCAT decision will more than likely be made on ‘political’ consequences grounds rather than the welfare of the dogs. There has clearly been a monumental stuff up with this case by each and every authority involved - all legistlated to protect these dogs and all who have failed dismally.

These dogs will not survive if seized by the RSPCA, who are all too quick with their same hat fits all screening and assessments. These dogs must go into private rescue with people who truly understand rescue and the specific breeds involved.

Keep protesting and demanding change Victoria - Australia is behind you !

The RSPCA should be preventing things like this from happening - I cannot actually understand what their role is, I used to think it was for the Prevention of Cruelty, as per their name. This is obviously incorrect. They need to change their name as they mislead the public who give donations to PREVENT Cruelty. The RSPCA should be leading a campaign to inform people where puppies in petshops actually come from. Hopefully that would stop some purchases - it doesn’t stop them all (I’ve explained it to people and they’ve still bought a pet shop puppy). Close down petshops and make puppy farming illegal. For God’s sake do it NOW. How many more must suffer???

  10. 10 Cristy

When is the Government going to wake up and investigate the RSPCA! Everyone has known about their incompetence for years!
They were exposed on ABC Four Corners in 2004 (A Blind Eye)and still nothing has changed.

  11. 11 Mea

Sadly Monday’s VTAC hearing will be to late for the Paxton’s dogs as they are being sold off and shipped off to be hidden at other puppy farms across Victoria.

  12. 12 Susie Hearder

The RSPCA absolutely excel at fundraising. Instead of raising funds they should be raising the bar of animal welfare in this country.
Look at all the small Rescue Groups throughout the country. Why would there be a need for them if the RSPCA were doing the job they purport to do?
Like their current caged egg TV advertising - very confronting that one !
What is confronting is what poor Debra and her team have to do. You are all legends in my eyes. Legislation needs to change to help end these atrocities.
And we need to help spread the word to bring in Oscars Law!

  13. 13 Dave Cooke

What a Joke in a supposedly civilized country these types of atrocities are happening all over Australia and who exposes them Not Goverment nor council not even million dollar organizations whose job it should be to expose and stop this type of situation. No its left up to a small non profit group (no big salarys here) to do the dirty work.Wake up Australia this type of thing must be stopped for good.

  14. 14 Lisa J Ryan

I fear Mea is correct. Moorabool Council will be pleased because then Council will only need to seek ‘Compliance’ orders through VCAT to demolish the hellhole sheds which have imprisoned these forgotten dogs and any other breaches to ‘planning’ laws. Council will be ’spared’ any need to undertake ‘Enforcement through the courts which is what they should have done. They may even make some $$$ out of a few fines. ’Compliance’ not “Enforcement” is the “preferred” method for local government and obviously so because it is far less expensive.

Then all those legislated to protect these dogs, all who have known about this hellhole and all who have NOT followed up and done their “paid’ jobs, - Council, RSPCA, DPI, DSE and the list goes on and on and on, can argue amongst themselves who is to blame.

No-one legislated to protect these dogs’ wants to deal with THEIR mess.

God help these Paxton dogs and all such puppy farm dogs. In spite of the Victorian Premier’s comments - the laws are not adequate and they do NOT protect the innocent.

I have seen cover-ups like this before with everyone involved taking the easy, affordable, and “preferred” options and all sacrificing the dogs in the process without the blink of an eye. The case is without question the worst of many many examples.

I will not forget or give up on these dogs, those who have died and those still suffering, and nor will the public - EVER !!! Take note Premier - it is an election year.

  15. 15 Mea

Where are these dogs now? The Paxton’s recently microchipped the majority of them. If the council, government and RSPCA cared about the welfare of these poor creatures they could easily trace the microchips to the new owners and what they would see is that these dogs are in the same hell hole but at a new address.

  16. 16 Jane

What veterinarians are involved with these dogs ? until this group of high money earners is forced to adopt a true committment to animal welfare / rights, the animals they treat are purely commodoties.

  17. 17 Lee Robertson

I used to support R.S.P.C.A, no more. With all that money & still NO support for these poor creatures in need. What exactly is done with all that money donated by many people who believe that you are pro-active in saving these animals?
All credit to the other smaller & more dedicated groups who are out there doing their best for the critters.
We can all do something, so please let’s go ahead & do it.

  18. 18 Damnit

I agree the RSPCA are useless unless there is a TV camera following them. They are more motivated by money than by animal care, so they are no better than the animal abusers themselves.

All puppy farmers, BYB’s and pet shops who don’t rehome rescue animals should be banned. Also, all pounds in the country should have mandatory desexing.

It is long overdue for these changes to occur. Governments please implements these changes NOW!!

  19. 19 stephanie

what happened did they get the dogs?

  20. 20 stephanie

visit down in gippsland preferably Sale and you will see how the vets and the council (working together with the farmers) are profiteering and supplying the rest of the state with designer puppies. it is a million dollar business for them and the council’s response: while there is a market for designer pups why is it wrong to have puppy farms.

while you have ignoramuses on council like this and also as vets in this area, you will never stop this cruelty.

it is still puppy farm central down there this is where most of the farms are.

  21. 21 Lisa J Ryan

Stephanie is right. While they are springing up everywhere, Gippsland has a huge amount and good old Wellington Shire Council appears to have the bulk. It is beyond me while people living there are not screaming on a daily basis to their elected representatives.

  22. 22 Jan Nash

Well done to all those who went undercover to show us what is going on in these farms. This is so appalling that we all have to stand up and be counted for the animals. Anything I can do I will.

  23. 23 Lisa J Ryan

Did anyone else notice the footage of the Pugs and the frightened Siberian Huskies in the ABC’s 7.30 report on Puppy Farming. These were, I believe, the long suffering ‘Paxton’ dogs. Forgotten by the responsible, legislated Moorabool Shire Council for EIGHT years.

What has been their fate ?

  24. 24 Deb Conner

The RSPCA is just like the ASPCA…f****** worthless! Ours murdered a pit bull named Oreo after the dog had survived being thrown off a rooftop by some lower class, street trash. There was a rescue wanting Oreo, and the ASPCA killed the dog anyway. I will NEVER donate money to them again, ever! I send all their solicitaions back to them…using THEIR free postage, and write, “Remember Oreo” on it. Deb

  25. 25 Isabel

I’m not surprised to read all of the above. While I found most staff at the RSPCA in Sydney helpful, greatful and encouraging for what I was doing off my own back in the Bankstown area I felt frustrated and unable to get the support of the RSPCA in educating the general public in that nasty part of Sydney. I was encouraged by some staff to write to the CEO with my concerns but I eventually gave up writing and leaving messages because I never once got a reply from the CEO. I felt very let down by them, especially since I was constantly trying to explain to people (while I was trapping feral and dumped cats there were always people curious to know what I was doing and why I was doing what they thought to be the RSPCA’s job) exactly what the RSPCA’s capacity was. I feel that the RSPCA is not doing a good job at educating EVERYBODY. If we are to make any progress in culling the number of killings of innocent creatures surely the first step would be to make sure EVERYBODY in this first world country knows about the third world attitude many of us have towards non human animals. Thankyou to those of you out there who sacrifice your time and resources to help protect those who cannot defend themselves. One cannot understand the inhumanity of humans.
